Cancer Stem Cell
Cancer Stem Cells (CSCs) are small subpopulation (0.1~5%) within tumor bulk, harboring tumor-propagating ability. CSCs can self-renew and differentiate as normal stem cells, and also has intrinsic resistance to conventional anti-cancer therapy. CSCs are primary cause for clonal heterogeneity, therapeutic resistance and recurrence, impeding efficient therapy (Signal Transduct Target Ther. 2020 Feb 7;5(1):8).
Therefore, complete elimination of CSCs has been recognized as an indicator that can measure the success or failure of cancer treatment.
